How to measure cushions
When ordering a new piece of foam, please measure the length, width and depth to the nearest half inch/centimetre.
If you're measuring an existing piece of foam, please take into account the fact that it may have lost it's original shape or even shrunk in size!
TIP: It's easier to fit a piece of foam that is slightly too large into a gap, than to make a piece of foam that is slightly too small fit correctly.
If you are measuring foam to fit into existing covers please see our instructions following
Cushion re-filling
If your original filling is Foam
If you are replacing foam cushions that have either a stockinette or polyester wadding fitted, you must be sure to measure allowing for the total depth of the foam in the centre of the cushion.
Most cushions have a border or gusset that is slightly smaller than the actual foam fitted into the cover. If you only measure the border you will find you have a loose baggy cover when you insert your new foam. So when you measure you need to look at the thickest part of the existing foam to be able to tell what the original depth was.
Sometimes the existing foam may be rounded at the edges making it difficult to judge the correct depth. If you place you cushion directly onto the floor and place a tape measure at the side of the cushion from the floor up, you should be able to estimate the deepest part of the foam.
If the front edge is rounded then remember to order a bullnosed edge cushion. If you are not sure that the depth is correct you can add a standard weight wadding to allow for any mis-measurements you may have made.
If your original filling is Feather or Fibre
Many suites are now made with either a hollow fibre or feather filling. These cushions give a round and plump look to your suite but are often hard work to keep looking nice, and end up looking like an unmade bed!
We are able to refill these cushions with a combination of foam and wadding. If you have shaped cushions it is advisable to use our Cushion Re-filling Service, as it is very difficult to correctly measure the existing cushions. If you are happy to measure yourself you will need to allow for a heavy polyester wadding to be wrapped around the foam.
Because the cushion you are measuring will be plump it will be difficult to measure the depth correctly. If you place your cushion directly onto the floor and place a tape measure at the side of the cushion from the floor up, you should be able to estimate the deepest part of the foam.
When ordering please remember to add the heavy wadding to your order to re-create the plump soft look your suite would have had when new. You also need to look at the width and length of the existing cushions as these are often much larger than the gap they have to fit into. If you place your cushions on the floor and measure them do they measure similar to the gap on the sofa they will have to fit into when completed?.
Often these measurements can be very different and this is when the Cushion Re-filling Service is needed. If the measurements are very different please give us a call and we will be able to advise the best action to take. If the measurements are similar then again allow for the heavy wadding before ordering your sizes. If you have any problems please call our helpline.
